Summer 2018 Newsletter

From the SnoValley Tilth Board of Directors

Dear SnoValley Tilth friends and supporters,
We wish to update you on changes at SVT. As you may have heard, Melissa Borsting is stepping down as Executive Director effective July 31.
First, we want to thank Melissa for all she’s done for SnoValley Tilth. In her 6 1/2 years with SVT she grew the organization from a staff of one to a staff of five, leveraging sustainable funding sources and building several new programs to serve area farmers. Along the way she has forged many new partnerships for the organization and helped us ensure that farmer voices are a part of the local food conversation throughout our region.

As we prepare to hire a permanent Executive Director, the board is extremely lucky that Libby Reed has agreed to take on the role of Interim Executive Director. Libby has been on staff at SVT for 2 1/2 years and will be able to provide continuity through this transition. In her tenure at SnoValley Tilth she has impressed us all with her ability to distill member feedback and guide the organization to consistently respond to farmer needs. Libby owns a farm in Monroe and has a background in non-profit management.

The SVT board has established a hiring committee and will begin the search for an Executive Director, with the goal of having someone in place early in 2019.

The SnoValley Tilth Board of Directors

From the Desk of the Director

As many of you have heard by now, I am stepping down from my position as Executive Director as of July 31. I am extremely proud of the significant program growth and organizational development I have had the opportunity to be a part of over the past 6 ½ years. With an exceptional staff and dedicated board, we were able to articulate a multi-year plan for SnoValley Tilth and have begun to see it come to fruition. The organization continues to expand its ability to serve the needs and requests of our farmer members – all in our shared pursuit of a thriving local food system.

While I am leaving the organization, I won’t be going far and will continue to work on issues related to SnoValley Tilth’s mission. I will be focused on agricultural land access and utilization in a role with King County and look forward to continuing to partner with organizations around the region, including SVT.

Thank you for your part in the local food system – whether it is producing food, buying local, or promoting farm-friendly policies in our region; your hard work and dedication are important and inspiring. And thank you for your ongoing support of SnoValley Tilth, I am very excited to see what is next for the organization!

with gratitude,

Program Updates

Our POP (Power of Produce) Club kid’s program has expanded this year, running from June through August. With fun new activities every week, we’ve already enjoyed scavenger hunts, veggie trivia, and pedaling our own smoothies on a blender bike! Visit the POP Club tent at CFM to sign up and see what it’s all about!

CFM’s Music on the Grass concert series has welcomed back many beloved local artists this season, and in partnership with 4Culture, have also brought featured artists to perform, including Mikey Mike the Rad Scientist on June 5th, and Planes on Paper (with Alec Shaw and Zan Fiskum opening) on July 10th. Coming up, we look forward to hearing the musical talents of featured artists Moorea Masa on August 7th and Caspar Babypants on September 11th!

Membership Program

Summer is here, and that means our monthly potlucks have moved outdoors! Join us every second Monday of the month to share a meal and tour a local farm. We’ve enjoyed farm tours at Tractor Farm in June and Sno-Valley Farms in July, and look forward to our upcoming August and September potlucks. Bring a dish to share, and see what these local farms have going on! Dinner and conversation from 6:00-7:00pm, and farm tour from 7:00-8:00pm.

Experience Farming Project

We’ve made a few improvements at the Experience Farming Project’s Stuart Landing site that will create a safer and more efficient working environment for the farm businesses here. One improvement is replacing the old farm access bridge over Weiss Creek with a new, larger and sturdier bridge. This project was in the works for several years, and the new bridge was finally completed in July. This bridge will improve the safety and accessibility of the Stuart Landing site. Another big improvement recently completed at Stuart Landing was construction of the walk-in cooler. Having access to a walk-in cooler is a game-changer for a new farm business, as being able to harvest and cool vegetables quickly gives them better quality and a longer life post-harvest.

These improvements are an exciting step forward for the Experience Farming Project and will help our participants as they establish and grow their farm businesses. What’s next for infrastructure improvements at EFP? Irrigation!
