Spring 2018 Newsletter

From the Desk of the Director

Spring has arrived in the Valley, with new crops starting to fill the fields, flowers beginning to bloom, and barn swallows once again swooping through skies that are, at long last, giving us glimpses of blue.

This season is a busy time for all, and that includes us here at SVT. Our 2018 Member Directory has gone to print and will be available soon. The Carnation Farmers Market opens for the 2018 season with a great lineup of vendors – both new and familiar – on May 1st. Our annual Friends of the Fields Benefit Dinner and Auction will be held at Craven Farm on May 19th. The Experience Farming Project is launching into the 2018 growing season, and our Membership program has plenty in store. Read on below for more of what’s coming up!

It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of activity that occurs this season, and we appreciate the timely reminder recently shared by our friends at Present Tense Farm:

Spring always brings a lot of emotion. It can be overwhelming and challenging. That’s why sometimes, it’s important to stop, breathe, and appreciate what’s around you.

Wishing everyone a season of blue skies and breathing space!

Advocacy Updates

Farm, Fish, Flood 2.0

The Fish, Farm, Flood (FFF) process, initiated by King County in 2012, brought together key stakeholders to develop a plan to balance the needs of fish habitat while stewarding critical agricultural land and minimizing flood impacts. A large part of this work strives to untangle the puzzle of how to locate stream and riparian projects in areas that will result in the most positive impact on fish habitat while yielding the least loss of high quality farmland. SnoValley Tilth actively participated in FFF 1.0 and is proud to continue our advocacy in FFF 2.0.

Read on HERE to learn more about the FFF process and SnoValley Tilth’s involvement.

Membership Program

This spring we launched a pilot bulk buy program for our farm members and we’re waiting for the last order, coming in Wednesday. Many thanks to those of you who participated in the pilot. We’re putting the final confirmations on the monthly Farm Tours for the summer and are looking forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming May 14th Potluck. This month we’ll be celebrating our farmers and the coming season. We’ll be celebrating in Duvall this month, we hope you’ll join us!

Experience Farming Project

The Experience Farming Project is gearing up for the 2018 season, with five new farms and five returning farms, and more than six acres in production. We have begun some soil work at both of our program sites… and after patiently waiting during this wet spring, soil conditions have improved enough for us to get underway with plowing!

Under long-awaited blue skies, the fields are plowed and will soon be ready for planting at the Stuart’s Landing EFP site:
